Amazing!
So many agree with you.
Good Morning Dan, and glad greetings to each visitor.
I didn’t know it was ‘This Much’ No words to describe such beauty and talent.
Appreciate you showing the actual buildings right at the start; really gives some context.
Greatly appreciate your ministry here Dan!
Those paintings are beautiful!
Thank you again for your service to the body of Christ.
Whole lot of paint on those walls—and ceiling. Must be the world-record holder.
So say you!
Entirely my pleasure, Walter. So glad it’s meaningful to you.
I think it took Michelangelo 6 years to paint the Last Judgement. Together with the splendid ceiling, these frescoes are among the greatest achievements of Western painting. It is also the private Pope’s chapel, here are held papal ceremonies and it is used as the site of the Conclave, when a new Pope will be elected.
Raphael made the designs for the series of tapestries that hang at the bottom of the side walls, they depict events from the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
It would be astonishing indeed if such a showcase were not employed for major functions. One of the pope's perks!
Good Morning Dan, and everyone. My wife visited the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel back in the 70s. She said that it was actually smaller than she thought it would be.
It’s on my bucket list of places to see someday.
Absolutely beautiful. I am in awe of the place and the history that has happened there.
Pete, its reputation > its size.
Hope you get there!
wow
talk about making every inch count...
with all this art, even an illiterate person would be able to enjoy the Bible
Don’t they need to provide scissor-lifts to raise folks up nearer the art?
yes
medieval scissor lifts
The controversial restoration and cleaning took place from 1984 to 1994. I visited in 1996 and while the ceiling and Last Judgement were finished they were still working on some of the non Michelangelo works along the walls at that time. Your wife would have seen the unrestored version of the works of the Chapel in the 1970s. Personally I didn’t find it too small but maybe I didn’t have any expectation as to size. Compared to St. Peters next door yeah its small I’ll grant that.
